Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately until 16 sts remain on each of the 1st and 3rd needles.

Work without decreasing until piece measures 6 inches for Size 81/2; 7 inches for Size 91/2; 8 inches for Size l01/2; 9 inches for Size 111/2; 10 inches for Size 121/2, or 21/4inches less than length desired.

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: Knit to last 3 sts on 1st needle, k 2 tog, k 1; on 2nd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1; on 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit to end of rnd. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately until 16 sts remain. With 3rd needle knit across sts of 1st needle (8 sts on each of 2 needles). Break yarn, leaving 20 inches of yarn at end of needle. Weave sts together (see below).

How to Weave the Toe

WEAVING . . . Step 1: Thread the 20 inches of yarn onto a wool needle (Fig. 4). Step 2: Hold the two needles with the stitches even and parallel, having the end of yarn at the right of back needle. Step 3: Insert wool needle as if to purl in first stitch of front needle. Draw yarn through, leaving the stitch on needle. Step 4: Insert wool needle as if to knit into the first stitch of back needle. Draw yarn through, leaving the stitch on needle.

Step 5: Insert wool needle as if to knit into first stitch of front needle (same stitch as before), and slip this stitch off the needle. Insert needle in next stitch of front needle as if to purl. Draw yarn through, leaving the stitch on needle.

Step 6: Insert wool needle as if to purl into the stitch of back needle and slip this stitch off. Insert wool needle into next stitch of back needle as if to knit. Draw yarn through, leaving stitch on needle.

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all sts are worked off. Darn in end of yarn securely.

First Half of Heel . . . Attach another ball of matching color yarn and, with double yarn, purl across 16 sts. Turn. Work over this set of sts only as follows: 1st row: * Sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Purl across. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until heel measures 21/4inches, ending with 1st row.

To Turn First Half of Heel: 1st row: P 1, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 2nd row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 2. Turn. 3rd row: P 2, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 4th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 3. Turn. 5th row: P 3, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 6th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 4. Turn. 7th row: P 4, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 8th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 5. Turn. 9th row: P 5, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 10th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 6. Turn. 11th row: P 6, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 12th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 7. Turn. 13th row: P 7, p 2 tog, p 1. Turn. 14th row: Sl 1 st as if to purl, k 8 (9 sts). 15th row: P 9. Break off extra ball. Attach a ball of yarn to match color at base of this half of heel and purl across, following chart or keeping in pattern as the case may be.

Second Half of Heel . . . Attach another ball of matching color yarn and, with double yarn, (sl 1, k 1) 8 times. Turn. Work over this set of sts only to correspond with First Half of Heel until heel measures 21/4inches, ending with a purl row.

To Turn Second Half of Heel: 1st row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 2nd row: Sl 1, p 2. Turn. 3rd row: K 2, sl 1, k 1, .s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 4th row: Sl 1, p 3. Turn. 5th row: K 3, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 6th row: sl 1, p 4. Turn. 7th row: K 4, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 8th row: sl l,p 5. Turn. 9th row: K 5, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 10th row: sl 1, p 6. Turn. 11th row: K 6, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 12th row: sl 1, p 7. Turn. 13th row: K 7, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1. Turn. 14th row: sl 1, p 8 (9 sts). 15th row: K 9. Break off extra ball.

INSTEP .. . With remaining ball of yarn, pick up and knit 16 sts down side of heel (see Fig. 5). Place a marker on right hand needle. Follow chart or work in pattern across. Place another marker on right hand needle. Pick up and knit 16 sts along other half of heel and knit across remaining heel sts.

To Shape Instep: 1st row: Purl across to marker, transfer marker, follow chart or work in pattern across to next marker, transfer marker and purl to end of row. 2nd row: Knit to 3 sts before marker, then sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1, transfer marker, follow chart or work pattern across to next marker, transfer marker, k 1, k 2 tog, knit to end of row. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until the sts on the outside of each marker are reduced to one-half the total number of stitches between markers at center. Work until top of chart is reached or until the same number of patterns are made as shown in photograph.

To Complete Foot: Work with main color only as follows: 1st rnd: With double-pointed needle knit to marker—this is 1st needle; remove marker, with 2nd needle knit across center sts; remove marker; with 3rd needle knit remaining sts. (The sts on the 1st and 3rd needles when added together should amount to the same number of sts as those on 2nd needle. If there is an odd stitch on second needle, then decrease 1 st on 3rd needle).

Join and work in rnds (knit each rnd) until foot measures 2 inches less than desired length from back of heel.

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, knit across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1; on 2nd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit to last 3 sts from end of needle, k 2 tog, k 1; on 3rd needle, k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., knit to end of needle. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat the last 2 rnds until 16 sts remain. Weave sts together—see page 135. Sew up back seam neatly, matching colors.
