PREFACE - We should like to take you into our confidence and tell you our purpose in compiling this book. To some people, adventure can only be found in a trip to romantic, faraway places. To others —and it is to these people we dedicate our book—it lies within the four walls of home, in the familiar tasks of daily living, in the odd moments of leisure in which to create with needle and thread, the unparalleled beauty of handwork.
1. EMBROYERY - For centuries a pretty woman at her embroidery has been a favorite subject for artists. There is something graceful, charming and infinitely feminine about the flashing thrust of the needle, the play of light on colored floss, the toy-like scissors . . . the gradual blossoming of petal or leaf.
2. EMBROYERY #2 - No. P. E. 4915 Greek Luncheon Set Materials: Six Strand Floss, 7 skeins of Copper, 5 skeins of Black, 3 skeins each of Myrtle, Light Cardinal; 2 skeins of Burnt Orange; 1 skein of Yellow ...3/4 yard of ecru linen, 36 inches wide . . . Crewel Needle No. 6.
Cut centerpiece 131/2 inches in diameter, two place mats 103/4 inches in diameter, and two glass mats 71/4 inches in diameter. Trace border as shown in diagram A, page 42, on all mats, 1/4inch in from edge all around.
3. QUILTS - The patchwork quilt is part and parcel of our country's past—and present. While many things on the American scene have changed since Colonial days, the same precise and beautiful quilt patterns that great-great-grandmother made out of scraps of fabric are being followed by women today
4. QUILTS #2 - Join 1 white and 2 print No. 4 units to each side of No. 5 unit. Join a white No. 1 unit to each corner. Complete block as shown.
Setting the Quilt . . . For Single Size, set 7 x 10 blocks. For Double Size, set 9 x 10 blocks.
Quilting . . . Quilt all units Vs inch away from all seams. Quilt center of No. 5 unit to form a nine patch. Bind all edges.
5. KNITTING - Sometimes it seems that one should add the title of Financial Genius to the designation of mother and homemaker. No matter how thrifty or ingenious she is, there comes a point at which the budget balks and refuses to stretch another penny's worth. That is why mothers all over America are knitting two, purling two, trying to keep the budget balanced and the whole family in sartorial splendor.
6. KNITTING #2 - Materials: Wool Floss, 2 Ply, 3 balls (1 oz. balls) each of Cherry Red, Blue Jewel and Black for Sizes 12 and 14; 4 balls of each color for Size 16 . . . Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (23/4 mm. size) . . . Bone Crochet Hook No. 2 ... 1 small black button . . . Narrow leather belt .. . Shoulder pads.
GAUGE: 71/2 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
7. CROCHET - If a poll were taken on hobbies, crochet would be found among the five top favorites. Certainly there are very few hobbies you can take with you to luncheons, picnics and Aunt Emma's tea party. It requires no elaborate equipment, a very modest investment. From a slender needle, thread and a page of instructions come forth rare and beautiful designs to ornament and enrich your home. Relaxing, soothing and strictly non-strenuous, crochet is a complete rest-cure to be taken in easy sittings.
8. CROCHET #2 - SECOND MOTIF . . . Work as for First Motif until 4 rnds are completed. 5th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, (ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in tip of next cluster) twice; ch 2, sc in corresponding loop of First Motif, ch 2, sc in next sp on Second Motif, ch 2, sc in next loop on First Motif, ch 2, sc in tip of next cluster on Second Motif, and complete rnd, joining next 6 loops to adjacent loops of First Motif as before.
9. TATTING - IFtatting is new to you, you'll be surprised how easy —and enjoyable—it is to learn. In no time your shuttle will be flying through the thread, and your only problem will be in choosing from the myriad enchanting designs. There are gossamer doilies and place mats, a tablecloth of extraordinary delicacy and beauty .

11. RUGS - How is the floor show at your house? Shall we start with the living room? Want to give it a modern uncluttered feeling—a lap-of-luxury-look? Try Shaggy (made in 12 inch squares) and choose a color that is becoming to your room and you. We like two shades of dusty beige or caramel or grey but you may have other ideas. You can make it from wall-to-wall size or large enough to place in front of the sofa. If your room is in maple and your lamps are brass, accent it with Daisies, white on a rich, red background. For a colonial bedroom or sewing room there is —you guessed it! — Colonial, a charming circular design.
12. RUGS #2 - 24 x 36 Inches
Illustrated in Color on page 206
Materials: Cotton Rug Yarn, 14 balls of Dark Green and 5 balls each of Red and White . . . Rug Hook, Size G.
Starting at one short end with Green, make a chain 30 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 24 inches and has an odd number of sts. Cut off remaining chain.
13. AFGHANS - Hospitality—the generous gesture, the understanding heart, the friendly atmosphere—these are what give a house its welcoming warmth.
We, of course, have a specially warm place in our hearts for afghans, and they have always reciprocated our affections, kept us comfortable and cozy through innumerable "forty winks" down the years.
14. PINEAPPLES - Decorative as well as delightful, the pineapple is the all-American favorite design, and we have assembled here for your delectation a very exciting collection. Here is a tablecloth that will make a memorable setting for important dinner occasions, a choice of luncheon cloths to provide table talk for your guests, a variety of centerpieces and doilies to set off a favorite bowl of flowers, a rare lamp, a gleaming tea service . . . there is an unusually handsome chair set, several runners and — to round out the collection — two vanity sets for your bedroom.
15. PINEAPPLES #2 - Materials: Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, Small Ball: 8 balls of White or Ecru, or 10 balls of any color . . . Steel Crochet Hook No. 10.
Centerpiece measures 15 inches across center; each Place Mat 13 inches.
CENTERPIECE . . . Make 3 rows of 3 motifs as for No. 7859—see page 247, joining motifs and making fill-in laces to correspond.
THE END
